  8. This is a demonstration version of Communicate Lite. The Save, Save As, Open, and Session Directory commands are disabled. The application is fully functional in every other way.

  10. By purchasing Communicate Lite, you will receive additional tools, including the Mark/Space ZMODEM Tool, as well as a 64 page manual with a tutorial, reference, index, and table of contents.

Communicate is an innovative new application from Mark/Space Softworks which gives you easy, instant access to all of the communications tools in your toolbox. Using Communicate, you can easily access one of each of the three fundamental types of Communications Tools and connect to your favorite BBS, another Macintosh running Communicate, or even a Macintosh workstation on a network.

  18. What is the Communications Toolbox?

Most communications applications share certain functions - making and maintaining connections, emulating a terminal, and transferring files using common protocols. A traditional product is able to connect to a single type of device, emulate a few popular terminals, and supports a few file transfer protocols. An application that supports the communications toolbox can support as many connection types, terminal emulations, and file transfer protocols as there are tools available.

  23. What are Communications Toolbox Tools?

  25. Communications Toolbox Tools are special files which allow your Macintosh to emulate, transfer material, and connect to remote computers. There are three main kinds of tools in the Communications Toolbox:

  27. 1. Connection Tools: These establish a basic connection between two (or more) computers. When you install Communicate, the Apple Modem Tool will be installed into the Extensions folder of your System folder.

  29. 2. Terminal Emulation Tools: These allow your Macintosh to emulate a terminal supported by the system to which it is connected. When you install Communicate, the VT102 tool will be installed into the Extensions folder of your System folder.

  31. 3. File Transfer Tools: These allow your Macintosh to transfer files over a phone line or other connection. When you install Communicate, the XMODEM tool will be installed in the Extensions folder of your System folder.

  33. A basic set of tools is included with this demo. Many more are available from Apple, Mark/Space and other vendors. For example, there are several tools that support connections via TCP, a popular networking standard.

  38. Use Balloon Help to learn about items on the screen. Balloon help is available for menu titles, menu items, and the contents of dialog boxes and windows.

  43. To use Balloon Help, choose Show Balloons from the "?" menu. Then point to items on the screen to see help balloons about them.

  52. Where balloon help is designed to answer questions such as ‚ÄúWhat is this?‚Äù, topical help is designed to answer questions like ‚ÄúHow do I do it?‚Äù or ‚ÄúWhy would I want to do that?‚Äù.
